Candles and other home fragrance providers help add an air of relaxation and calmness, and provide a sense of comfort, while adding a beautiful, ambient touch to your home. That’s ‘The Power of Scent’.

Fragrances evoke freshness and softness. They can adjust our mood to enrich our lives. They can trigger forgotten memories, emotions and capture our imagination. I’m sure you have experienced a relaxed mood when you breathe in a particular scent. Or, perhaps, an unbidden smile came to your lips as a past, pleasant memory came to mind when you smelled a particular fragrance?

The power of scent is the foundation of aromatherapy and all the benefits it brings.

Aromatherapy has been used since the time of the Egyptians for its health benefits as well as the purely pleasurable effect. Candles, wax melts, diffusers and even soaps are ideal vehicles for aromatherapy. That’s why I have ensured our products use a carefully selected range of fragrances and that we have a natural approach as a priority.

Have you ever wondered why scents affect us this way?

Well, here’s the science bit… The olfactory bulb connects directly to the limbic portion of the brain. This highly-specialized portion of the brain is also home to the amygdala (responsible for our emotions and feelings) and the hippo-campus (where our memories are stored). These brain centres perceive odours and simultaneously access memories and their associated feelings and emotions.

This very basic and direct connection between sense and brain is why smells often trigger memories. It also explains how aromas provide emotional support. Tiny molecules are working inside your brain to unlock traumas, conflicts, and memories that may be causing emotional stress.

So, the next time you are feeling a bit stressed or under the weather, just reach for your favourite scent and allow the magic (and the science) get to work.
